Weekend trips you should experience in 2018

Kerala often tops the list of must-visit destinations for those looking to travel to India, but not many actually manage to visit all the various beautiful locales in the state. It is true that the region is a year-round travel destination, but with the help of travel enthusiasts, we have prepared a calendar to make it easy for you by planning a weekend every month this year at a different location.

Gavi

Gavi is the perfect place to ward off the summer blues and experience nature in all its splendor. A stay at one of the eco-friendly lodges nearby the forest or even atop a tree house for a more enriching experience. A weekend trip should also find time to travel to the nearby Pamba reservoir and tea plantations at Kumily.

Kakkayam

The ancient port city of Kozhikode might be a foodie's paradise in Kerala, but it's also got several scenic spots worth visiting. At an altitude of 2500 ft, the Kakkayam hills have enough to entertain even the most jaded traveler - a green landscape, several trekking routes, waterfalls, and a rich collection of flora and fauna. A must visit is the Vayalada peak a 45-minute drive away.

Munroe Island

Mundrothuruthu, as it is referred to locally, is abundant with natural splendor in two different, yet equally captivating faces; as displayed in the seasons of summer and monsoon. Why not spend any weekend of the year in this village, where you can traverse canals and waterways and witness the coir weaving and retting processes firsthand? Not mention fishing, feeding prawns, checking out mangroves etc. all while riding on canoes.

Nelliyampathy

Wildlife enthusiasts will find Nelliyampathy as also the Parambikulam natural reserve, both at Palakkad a paradise. The forest department arranges special jungle tours into the forest resplendent with opportunities to witness the wildlife close at hand. Those lucky enough may chance across elephant herds and bisons. For those wishing to sit back and take things slow, the region in the lap of forests can prove to be the perfect escape.

Ranipuram

The Ranipuram hills in Kasaragod is often called the Ooty of Kerala. It lies close to the Bhagamandala and Kodagu forest range as well as the Madikeri and Bekel Fort making it the perfect weekend getaway.

Thekkady

The cold weather at the start or end of the year makes it easier to spot the majestic tigers, leopards, elephants, bisons, and boars in their natural habitat. Indulge the budding nature photographer in you or merely watch the wildlife in all its glory on a jungle safari or a scenic boat ride on the Thekkady lake in the Periyar National Park.

Wayanad

Wayanad in the monsoons lets you experience its lush, green locales in full bloom. A plethora of captivating locations such as the Chembra peak, Edakkal caves, Meenmutty falls and the heart-shaped lake, the region is a treasure trove that wears a rich ensemble of flora and fauna on its sleeve.
